J Secrist
As a junior high student Judy was moved by several situations she observed in which students with disabilities were slighted by teachers and the school system. Unable to understand why schools did not provide for those who most needed help, Judy became a special education teacher working with secondary students. For over 30 years Judy worked with young adults with disabilities and with their families.
Determined to provide her students with the best opportunities, Judy enrolled in nearly every class and workshop offered to keep abreast of current trends and best practices. She earned both a Master’s degree and an Ed Specialist degree. Her skill level was recognized when she was selected as a Consulting Teacher to lead other special education teachers and to provide training and coaching.
Judy has always been sensitive to the feelings and needs of others. Her even disposition allows her to stay calm and to focus on the positive. One of her greatest joys of teaching was the close relationships she formed with her students. She still runs into them in the community and enjoys keeping up with their lives.
Working full time, going to school and raising a child has allowed (perhaps forced) Judy to hone her organization skills. She pays close attention to detail and is meticulous about follow up.
Judy was delighted to be selected as a Person Centered Planning Specialist. The training reinforced what she has learned from years of experience. Two of her favorite concepts from the Person Centered Planning training are:
1. We need to focus on people’s strengths
2. Families need information and support.
Judy looks forward to assisting and supporting individuals and their families as they plan for transitions. She wants to not only help to articulate dreams and hopes, but to help make them happen.
