What is Behavior Consultation?

Behavior Consultation approaches challenging behaviors from a Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) perspective. Behaviors are analyzed for their motivation: what purpose does this behavior serve? Challenging behaviors usually have an understandable and positive purpose.

Once the motivation of a behavior is determined, Behavior Consultation uses team-based interventions to help the participant achieve what they want in a positive way. In one-on-one training sessions with their Behavior Consultant, participants learn appropriate skills and behaviors. And in team training sessions, Behavior Consultants teach team members, including Targeted Service Coordinators and service providers, to implement the PBS plan.

Who is Eligible?

Behavior Consultation is provided to adult recipients of the HCBS/DD Waiver who are currently experiencing, or may be expected to experience, a behavioral crisis. Behaviors include internal and external maladaptive behaviors such as aggression, self-injury, program refusal, and inappropriate conduct.

Persons on Idaho’s Self-Direction waiver may also apply for our services, as may people paying with private funds.

How Does A Client Benefit?

A Behavior Consultant plays the dual role of therapist and advocate for a participant who is experiencing behavioral difficulties. This service provides intensive collaboration and training for the client as well as staff training to providers and team members as related to the needs of the participant.

Where do I go to get Services?

If you are interested in receiving Behavior Consultation or finding out more, contact your Targeted Service Coordinator (TSC). Your TSC can help assess your need for Behavior Consultation and if necessary, assist with making a referral to the Center on Disabilities and Human Development.
